's trip. on the ground, president obama and governor christie visited relief shelters throughout the area. the governor offered this assessment of the president to storm victims. he means what he says. it's important that he is here. christie had more praise later on. >> we spent a significant afternoon together, surveying the damage up and down the new jersey coastline. we were on marine one together, to be able to show the president that personally, had an opportunity to see it and discuss it at length, and going over to the shelter here, being able to meet with folks and see the president and his concern, the concern all of us have for making sure that things get back to normal as quickly as possible. i discussed all those issues today with the president, and i'm pleased to report that he has sprung into action immediately, to help get us those things, while we were in the car riding together. so i want to thank him for that. he has worked incredibly closely with me, since before the storm hit. i think this is our sixth conversation since the weekend, and it's been a great working rela

about automobile rescue. that is former governor ted strickland of ohio. an obama 2012 campaign co-chair. and also with us tonight is congressman tim ryan of ohio. gentlemen, great to have you with us. governor, you first. i can only think that this is a complete disservice to the people of ohio to go out in front of a crowd and erroneously put out information that cuts right to the fabric of what this election is all about and that's jobs. what's your reaction? >> my reaction is that mitt romney is a desperate man. he knows he's losing ohio. if he loses ohio, he's losing the election. for him to do what he did is despicable. think of the angst that those workers felt when they heard him say that. obviously, it showed a lack of judgment and a lack of truthfulness. this man is not ready to be the president of the united states of america. he is -- as jon huntsman said during the primary season, he is like a well-oiled weather vane. you never know where mitt romney is going to be on any issue on any day. this is just the latest example of his desperation in trying to reach the ohio v

[ male announcer ] you are a business pro. governor of getting it done. you know how to dance... with a deadline. and you...rent from national. because only national lets you choose any car in the aisle... and go. you can even take a full-size or above, and still pay the mid-size price. this is awesome. [ male announcer ] yes, it is, business pro. yes, it is. go national. go like a pro. that's the sound of car insurance companies these days. here a cheap, there a cheap, everywhere a cheap... you get it. so, what if instead of just a cheap choice, you could make a smart choice? like, esurance for example. they were born online and built to save p
to have an impact? because you've got, of course, governor christie out there just praising president obama. there haven't been major complaints of resources not getting there. it is all surrounds around the power. the approval rating of the president right now is the country thinks he's doing a good job with sandy. will this play in the election? >> sure, it goes to the whole question of the character and quality of presidential leadership. romney found that out in the second debate when he went after the president on libya, got slapped down, got corrected by candy crowley, and the president has a big advantage there. the question is deeper. the question is is this guy up to the crises we face as a nation? we saw barack obama in last week respond in exactly the way americans want him to respond, and who would have thought that chris christie would be the october surprise? that this guy would -- >> october political surprise. >> yeah. he would be the october political surprise, that he would stand up and it's true, and say the president has been incredible, he's been on the phone ever
and romney is trying to throw water on the fire. but what's actually happening is with all of obama coming in, we're throwing gas on the fire and ohio is going to deliver and prevent mitt romney from becoming president. >>. governor, isn't this a perfect example that mitt romney will say anything, anywhere to try to get a vote? the truth just simply doesn't matter? >> absolutely, ed. but ohioans, they figured this guy out. a swiss bank account, investments saying he likes to fire people, cars with el -- i mean homes with elevators for his cars. then we saw him in that videotape talking in such a disparaging, disrespectful way about so many americans and many of those people are ohioans. this guy doesn't understand regular working people. he's so out of touch. so it may be easy for him to come into a community and talk as he did and say he's going to lose all these jobs. not thinking about what it means for all those people. >> here's what i take out of the story. this guy wants to be president of the united states. he takes a morsel of information off the internet. it's totally not checked ou
this? and the reason they're worried is because governor romney is running ads saying that jeep is shipping jobs to china. there's only one problem. it's not true. >> it's just not ohio where president obama is surging. in 22 new polls of battleground states, the president leads in 19 of them. the obama campaign is taking nothing for granted, however. and joe biden put the campaign into perspective. >> i want to remind you, this is the end of daylight savings time tonight. it's mitt romney's favorite time of the year because he gets to turn the clock back. he wants to turn that clock back so desperately. this time he can really do it tonight, it happens. >> in between all this hectic campaigning, president obama visited fema for an update on storm relief. president obama's best new buddy, chris advertise tea of new jersey extended early voting in the state of new jersey today. from the romney campaign, another sign of desperation. here's governor romney in dubuque, iowa today. >> yesterday the president said something you may have already heard that i found troubling, spoke to a
